Valo / Lighting Hybrid

This project was done during my 5 month internship at Meshined Design. It was given to me by my mentors with the goal of honing my skills in the various stages of design.

My Goal

Using a non-linear process of designing, learning and building I was able to gather a wealth of knowledge about what I was doing.

Design

Learn

Build

My Brief

"Design a lighting hybrid (Lamp & flashlight) for homes.

Design/Learn/Build

Going from initial doodles to understanding material and interactions. These needed to be as intuitive as possible to provide the best user experience

Design/Learn/Build

Through product tear-downs, speaking to engineers and extensive trial & error I was able to understand how my design could work.

Design/Learn/Build

Understanding how to modify the parts with the restrictions of the components and executing the prototype.

Testing Usability

Evaluating the mechanism and understanding the comfort and ergonomics of the current design

Encompassing Duality

Using a non-linear process of designing, learning and building I was able to gather a wealth of knowledge about what I was doing.

Diving into details

Using the knowledge I gained from the functional prototype I was able to understand what would go into Valo and how the design can be optimized to encase this

Control Ring

The Control Ring gives the user an easy and intuitive way to adjust which light and what brightness they want.

The Beam

A powerful beam of light to illuminate those tight spaces

The Wand

A powerful beam of light to illuminate those tight spaces

Straight forward charging

USB charging allows Valo to be charged right where you want it to be

Elegant. Unobtrusive. Useful.

Fitting into any environment allows Valo to be used where ever you need it.

Next Steps

Creating accessories to amplify the scope of Valo to enhance the use cases
